Following the successful commissioning of a pioneer centre in Abuja about a fortnight ago, the Nigerian Police Force is to get information technology resource centres in all states of the federation.
According to details released on Monday by thye firm in charge of the Project, Jefe Resources Limited, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, has given a directive that such IT centres should be established in states.
Jefe Resources, the firm that built the Abuja centre is to handle the project via a public private partnership.

According to the Director, Jefe Resources, Mr. Edwin Unuajefe, each location would have a 50-seater resource centre in all state police commands.

He said that the IG had also authorised the firm to conduct computer and Internet training for all officers and men of the Nigerian Police nationwide

The need to give officers and men of the Nigeria Police proper IT training had been a major issue that had drawn comments from various circles for sometime now. While some limited action had be taken in the past, the current move by the Police with Jefe represents one of first major moves towards realising the desire.

Besides building the centre, the firm also stated that it would undertake to train all police officers in the force headquarters Abuja.

The National Information Technology Development Agency is also assisting in the training as it has provided several Mobile Internet Units. MIUs are specially built buses mounted with VSAT to provide Internet access anywhere across the country. The training, which has commenced and was declared open by the IG and several Deputy Inspectors General of Police.

At the opening the IG thanked Jefe Resources for initiating this project adding that the Force would seek its continuation under a public private partnership arrangement.

The IG said that as part of the training mobile internet unit buses were going to be deployed in collaborating with NITDA at various places where training facilities are not adequate

Our correspondent gathered that the training programme, though undertaken under public private arrangement had nothing to do with the current controversial Police Equipment Foundation/Fund matter.
