Nigeria records 2,400% Internet growth in 6 years
Nigeria has recorded consistent growth in Internet penetration in the last six years with the number of users in the country reaching over five million in 2006 compared to a mere 200,000 in year 2000.
The development, which represents over 2,400 per cent growth in users, makes Nigeria the fastest growing in Africa as against a continental average of 640 per cent
The Chief Executive Officer of Setlin.com, Mr. Eric Amagada, who stated in Lagos on Friday, said that the development confirmed the prevalent role of the Internet in modern life and its impact on channelling consumers’ preferences for the future.
Amagada, who spoke at a retreat organised by the Association of Corporate Affairs Managers of Banks, said that the Internet had become a central communication medium today as organisations seek to impact on their future markets, retain and grow successive generations of loyal customers
Delivering a lecture titled, Internet Publicity and Branding Strategy for Banks he said, “The Internet, which allows for global participation in local activities is the wise choice for growing market share and bottom-line, as the Internet-savvy population is the most appropriate target market, as banks gravitates more towards eBanking products and service offerings”.
The President, ACAMB, Mr. Eddy Ademosu, said that the Internet had also made the development of many electronic banking products which offer customers greater convenience, possible.
He said, “In the last three to four years, a lot of strategy has gone into ensuring that service delivery is acceptable, e-Banking, ATMs and all those things that are being pushed out for customers’ convenience”, he said.
Stressing the need for banks to ensure customer satisfaction, he said the people that customers had contact with on a daily basis, had to be trained for optimum service delivery.
He said, “We acknowledge that training is the key. We acknowledge that members should be able to render service well. So, it is in that wise that ACAMB together with FITC will be pushing out training programmes for our Front Desk officers”.
The Head, Public Affairs, Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation, Alhaji H.S. Birchi, in his paper, tasked the banks on the issue of service delivery.
He said mega banks were evolving by the day but depositors were yet to feel the impact of consolidation exercise. He urged banks to provide better offerings to customers.
He noted that Nigeria could become financially stronger through effective Internet publicity and branding.

INTERNET APOCALYPSE
Some Answers to the Internet $64,000 Question.
Fact: December 1996 there were 16mil users online representing 0.4% of world population. (W3C)
Fact: December 2006 there were 1.129 billion users representing 16.7% of world population. (W3C)
Fact: September 2007 there were 1.245 billion users representing 18.9% of world population. (Est W3C)
In North America alone the penetration of the internet has reached 69.5%, the generated advertising revenue in the third quarter of 2006 was $4.2 Billion.
What Does It All Mean?
If we compare this growth to a raging river that is hurting downstream at an unstoppable rate It means TWO THINGS,
1. That at some point in time (if we haven’t already) we will be touched by this river of information.
2. That we can, if we choose, use this river to our advantage.
In other words whether we act on this information or not we will still be affected by it.
So you can choose now to either be swept away by the rapids or throw your boat in and ride down the rapids with the hundreds (thousands) of successful people that are doing just that right now.
How Can We Start?
Exactly how you do this can still pose a problem for many newbies but the good news is that there are quite a few experienced teachers and mentors out there that can help in this quest.
In my next post I will provide a few places along the river for those of you who want jump straight in or for those people who just want to put their big toe in and test the waters.
Either way, you are in for an exciting ride.
To Your Success!
