Telecom investment: Minister calls for increased partnership with ITU

Nigeria stands to experience increased investment in the telecommunications sector if there is increased collaboration with the International Telecommunications Union, Minister of Communications, Dr. Obafemi Anibaba has said.
Speaking in Kaduna at the opening of a workshop on the 2006 ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, Anibaba, said Nigeria needed to improve local planning to explore various areas where there can be cooperation with ITU.
Anibaba said, “With good planning, Nigeria will certainly benefit in the areas of assistance and advice, investment opportunities training and manpower development.
He added that other areas of benefits include the development of Telecommunication/ICT sector, reaching out to the un-reached and underserved with Telecommunication/ICT and Technical Partnership

During the conference held in December 2006, Anibaba said a Nigerian, Mr. Shola Taylor was re-elected into the 12-member Radio Regulations Board of the ITU enabling the country to serve in the ITU Council and the radio Regulations Board for the next four years.
The Minister noted that it was not enough for Nigeria to belong to such international organizations like the ITU adding, that it is important and necessary that the desired impact of her membership be felt and made in these organizations and that maximum benefit is derived for the country.
“Nigeria is an emerging major global player and should be seen to be contributing and playing key leadership roles in such fora.
He explained that part of the objective of the local workshop was to discuss ways and make recommendations as to how best to achieve the core national ICT goals and objectives vis-à-vis those contained in the resolutions adopted at the Turkey conference.
