Entertainment Highway targets masses with pay tv service

Entertainment Highway Limited, a pay television service with a focus to offer the public access to the best of television programming has began operations in Lagos.
The firm said it was entering into pay television service to develop the local entertainment industry and address the huge gap present in today’s market as a result of the high pricing.
Some of the key offerings of the service include major news channels such as CNN, the English Premiership Football League, the Spanish La Liga and Dovevision, a Christian content channel.
Managing Director of the firm, Mr. Toyin Subair, said the firm was determined to change the face of television entertainment in Nigeria by ensuring that it made access to quality programming affordable and also made sure that Nigerians benefited from their industry locally.
According to Subair, HiTv would not just bring foreign content but would develop local channels and also offer very high quality broadcast comparable to what is existent anywhere in the world.
Speaking on the opening the firm’s service on Thursday in Lagos, Minister of Information and Communications, Mr. Frank Nweke Jr., expressed joy that Nigerians were at last getting a service which had the masses at heart
According to him, at over N10,000 per month, pay television in Nigeria was the costliest globally. He commended HiTV for addressing the market needs with its new service and called them to ensure that they sustained the way the have started.
According to him, “the Hitv venture represents the Nigerian spirit.”
HiTV said it was targeting a subscriber base of 100,000 in the first year (2007) and intend to grow this to 1m by 2010.
