‘Development of telecom infrastructure creates job opportunities’

The Chief Executive Officer of Celtel Nigeria Limited, Mr. Bayo Ligali has said that a well-developed telecommunications infrastructure is an important element in the process of job creation, business improvement and social interactions.
Speaking at the second Annual West African Forum in Abuja, Ligali, represented by the Head of Department, Commercial, North Central Region, Celtel Nigeria, Mr. Ken Ogujifor, noted that telecommunications was already playing an important role in the economic and socials lives of people even at the grassroots.

“The development of full bodied telecommunications infrastructure and access, creates job opportunities, advancement in the mode of banking operations, increases speed of broadband services, improves productivity in terms of speed of decision making, improves family and social relationship and enhances security and policing,” he said.

The Celtel Chief executive further buttressed the effectiveness of telecommunications in the grass root areas citing several examples. “In Tanzanian, a recent survey revealed that fishermen use mobile phones to find out prices in distant markets thus determining where to land their catch, which is also the same thing that the fishermen in the Niger Delta experience”.

He went on to say that even poultry farmers in Jos, Plateau state use mobile phones to confirm the price of eggs in Abuja to locate attractive markets before undertaking delivery, which could not have happened before the introduction of GSM.

The Celtel Chief Executive officer reaffirmed that the next level of growth in GSM will witness deeper penetration into unserved areas, wider range of services, enhanced data offering and optimal quality of service”
