Teletext, a technology which allows for the display of a large number of pages containing information on current events, weather, stock market and other areas of social and economic life on television screens has finally made its debut in Nigeria, 30 years after becoming operational.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the firm pioneering the service in Nigeria, Tee Global Media Limited, Mr. Daniel Dawodu, teletext, is now on Silverbird Television, the first television station to do so in sub-Sahara Africa.
According to him, the reason for the introduction of teletext into the local market at this time is because a lot of Nigerians are now more conversant with the use of technology.
“The coming of the GSM has made many people to be more comfortable with text technology. Nigerians are now familiar with using keypad to get information. Hence, we felt that this is the ideal time to introduce it”, Dawodu explained.
The Tee Global Media boss said that people do not need to buy additional equipment or change their television sets to be able to access teletext contents which come free of charge. He pointed out that being a thirty-years old technology, majority of the television sets already have the chip which facilitates it transmission embedded in them. “What we are simply doing is just getting people to know what they do not know they have”, he stressed.
On how to access teletext, Daniel Dawodu revealed that “all you need to do is to press the text button on your TV remote control but in case there is no text button on your remote control, then give us a call and we will tell you what to do”.He also disclosed that advertising through teletext has a unique advantage in that the contents are updated every 24 hours. “This means that at anytime of the day, when a person switches to teletext, one is sure to see advertisements and information”.
